Power Generation Systems

LNG and LPG-fueled power generation extends naturally from storage and vaporization equipment, particularly for off-grid and virtual pipeline-linked projects. KAF Cryogenics covers integration of gas-fueled generation packages with upstream storage and vaporization systems, configured to project fuel and capacity requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can LNG storage and power generation equipment be supplied as one integrated package?

Yes, storage, vaporization, fuel conditioning and generation can be scoped as one package with defined interfaces rather than as unrelated items. The integration work covers fuel demand at generator load, vaporizer duty at that demand, tank capacity for the intended autonomy and resupply interval, and the control and safety interlocks between sections. Each section still complies with the code applicable to it.

What fuel gas conditions are required at the generator interface?

Gas engines specify a pressure band, a temperature range and a gas quality at the fuel train inlet: stable supply pressure within the stated window, gas delivered above its dew point and free of liquid carry-over, and filtration to remove particulate. Methane number for LNG, or the propane and butane ratio for LPG, affects derating and ignition timing. Fuel conditioning between vaporizer and engine (pressure regulation, final heating, filtration and metering) is arranged to hold those conditions across the load range. Actual set points are taken from the engine's own fuel specification.

What capacity ranges are available for gas-fueled power generation systems?

Gas engine genset packages are commonly available from a few hundred kW per unit up to several MW, with multiple units paralleled where higher site capacity or N+1 redundancy is required. Selection depends on base load against peaking duty, the expected load profile, altitude and ambient derating, and whether heat recovery forms part of the scheme. Configuration is set against the project load study rather than a fixed range.

Are containerized power modules suitable for remote or temporary sites?

Containerized modules suit remote, temporary and phased projects because the generation set, control panel and auxiliaries are pre-assembled in a transportable enclosure requiring only foundations, connections and commissioning at site. Enclosure design addresses acoustic attenuation, ventilation for combustion and cooling air, and ambient protection appropriate to the location. For LNG or LPG-fuelled schemes the fuel storage and vaporization equipment remain separate items, positioned at the spacing distances the applicable code requires.

Can a power generation system operate on both LNG and LPG fuel?

An engine is configured for a defined fuel gas specification, and LNG (essentially methane) and LPG (propane and butane) differ substantially in methane number, calorific value and Wobbe index. Fuel-flexible or dual-fuel arrangements exist, but they require the corresponding fuel train hardware and control mapping, and derating normally applies on the lower methane number fuel. Where the fuel may change during the life of the project, this is stated at specification stage so that engine selection and fuel train design account for it.

How does a virtual pipeline project connect storage, vaporization and generation equipment?

Liquid is delivered by road tanker from a liquefaction plant or import terminal to a satellite station, where a vacuum-insulated storage tank provides buffer autonomy between deliveries. Vaporizers convert liquid to gas at the required flow, fuel conditioning sets pressure, temperature and filtration at the engine interface, and the genset converts fuel gas into electrical output. The sizing is chained: generation load sets fuel demand, fuel demand sets vaporizer duty, and delivery interval plus required autonomy sets tank capacity. Boil-off management and pressure build arrangements are included where storage holding time makes them relevant.
