What does a technical assessment of cryogenic or pressure equipment involve?

A technical assessment reviews the current condition of the unit against its design data and its operating history. For vacuum-insulated equipment this typically covers vacuum level and insulation behaviour, external condition and coating state, valve and instrument function, and the condition of piping and safety devices. The assessment records what was observed and what options follow from it, and it does not replace a statutory periodic inspection carried out by an authorised body.

How is the scope of a repair or maintenance activity determined?

Scope is defined per unit after the assessment, based on the observed condition, the equipment design data and the operating requirements stated by the owner. Findings are separated into items relevant to safe operation and items that are optional or can be deferred. No scope, turnaround or outcome is committed or guaranteed before the equipment has been assessed.

Can equipment be refurbished rather than replaced?

Refurbishment is often reasonable where the pressure envelope is sound and wear is concentrated in valves, instruments, gaskets and external coating. Vacuum loss, persistent cold spots or damage affecting the inner vessel change that picture and can make refurbishment impractical. Whether refurbishment is a workable option is decided case by case after assessment, and no result is guaranteed in advance.

What factors affect whether a component is repaired or replaced?

The main factors are the availability of a compatible replacement item, the condition of the surrounding equipment, the code and documentation implications of working on a pressure-retaining part, and how critical the component is to operation. Valves, instruments, safety devices and coating are frequently replaced items. Work touching pressure-retaining parts carries code implications and is treated separately from routine component replacement.

Does a technical assessment include a formal re-certification?

No. A technical assessment is a condition review, not a certification act. Formal periodic inspection and re-certification of pressure equipment are carried out by an authorised inspection body or notified body under the regulations applicable at the installation site. Support can be given in preparing the equipment and its documentation for such an inspection, but the certification decision rests with that body.

What information is useful to provide before requesting a technical assessment?

Nameplate data is the most useful starting point: design pressure, design temperature, volume, year and serial number, together with the medium in service and the original design code. Any available drawings, previous inspection reports and maintenance records add context, as does a description of the symptom observed (for example increased evaporation rate, external frosting, valve leakage or an instrument fault). Photographs of the nameplate, the affected area and the general installation usually convey condition faster than a written description alone.

Is maintenance support available for equipment not originally supplied by KAF Cryogenics?

Yes, maintenance support is not restricted to equipment originally supplied through KAF Cryogenics. What matters is that enough design data and documentation exist for the unit so that its condition can be assessed against its original design basis. Where documentation is incomplete, the possible scope is narrower and is discussed on that basis.
