AFGC professional technical code 152-01, revision A of December 2019, applies to single wall metallic pressure equipment in fixed installations other than refrigeration plant, where the fluids are renewed in normal operation and where part of the equipment operates below zero degrees Celsius.
In practice this is the cold box: the vessels, piping and their accessories that make up an air separation or process cold box, as opposed to the double walled storage vessels covered by code 152-02.
What the document covers
- Covers single wall metallic pressure vessels and piping, and their accessories.
- Applies to fixed, non-refrigerating installations where part of the equipment runs below 0 degrees Celsius.
- Scope is set by fluid, volume, nominal diameter and pressure under the French order of 20 November 2017.
- Applies where fluids are renewed or partly renewed in normal operation.
- Freely available from AFGC.
What it means for equipment
Cold box equipment is often treated as part of the process plant rather than as pressure equipment with its own in-service obligations. This code is a reminder that it is both.
For a project that combines process vessels with cryogenic storage, it is worth establishing early which code each item falls under, because the inspection arrangements and the records required are not the same.
