AFGC professional technical code 152-03, revision B of 2020, applies to cylindrical or spherical steel pressure vessels in unalloyed or low alloy steel which, because of their volume and pressure, fall under the French order of 20 November 2017 on pressure equipment in service.
The vessels concerned are fixed storage installations holding carbon dioxide or nitrous oxide, insulated with a covering such as agglomerated cork, expanded polyurethane or cellular glass. In other words, this is the French in-service regime for the foam insulated CO2 tank rather than the vacuum insulated one.
What the document covers
- Applies to fixed storage vessels for CO2 and N2O insulated with cork, expanded polyurethane or cellular glass.
- Scope is set by the French order of 20 November 2017 covering pressure equipment in service.
- Covers cylindrical and spherical vessels in unalloyed or low alloy steel.
- Published as a cahier technique professionnel, the French route for in-service inspection arrangements.
- Freely available from AFGC.
What it means for equipment
If equipment is going to France, the in-service inspection regime is decided before the tank arrives. A PIR or PUR insulated CO2 vessel has to be inspectable under this code, which has implications for the cladding, for access to the shell and for the documentation that travels with the vessel.
This is a good example of why the destination country belongs in the first line of an inquiry rather than at the order stage.
