Doc 56/09 is a training manual for drivers who transport carbon dioxide in road tankers, published in French by AFGC from the EIGA document. It exists because the most consequential part of the work is not the driving: it is the transfer of carbon dioxide between the transport tanker and the storage vessels at plants, at other suppliers and at customer sites.
The guide provides detailed information and instructions intended to be used for driver training, and the majority of it also applies to loading and unloading CO2 rail tank wagons. Parts of it apply to other gases carried in tankers.
What the document covers
- Written as training material for drivers carrying carbon dioxide in tankers.
- Focuses on safe loading, unloading and transfer between tanker and storage vessel.
- Covers the physical properties and handling behaviour of carbon dioxide.
- Most of the content also applies to CO2 rail tank wagons.
- Some instructions apply to other gases transported in tankers.
What it means for equipment
Transfer is where the equipment at both ends has to agree: coupling type, line size, pressure difference and the vapour return arrangement. A storage vessel that was specified without reference to how it will be filled creates a problem that shows up on the first delivery.
If you are adding a CO2 installation to a site, describe the delivery vehicle and the filling arrangement when you ask for equipment. It belongs in the specification.
