EIGA Doc 111/23 looks at carbon dioxide and dry ice production from the environmental side rather than the safety side. It revises the 2016 edition and is aimed at plant operators who need a formal environmental management system that a third party verifier can certify.
The publication also provides a basis for establishing best available techniques, which matters where industrial emissions rules apply. It deliberately leaves health and safety to the other EIGA publications and to national legislation.
What the document covers
- Concentrates on the environmental impacts of carbon dioxide and dry ice plant.
- Intended to support a certifiable environmental management system.
- Helps operating managers identify and reduce the environmental impact of these operations.
- Provides a basis for establishing best available techniques.
- Covers basic plant for carbon dioxide purification and liquefaction, and separately dry ice production.
- Includes informative appendices listing environmental impacts for both CO2 and dry ice production.
What it means for equipment
Environmental performance is becoming part of the equipment conversation, not a separate exercise. Boil-off losses, venting practice and the energy consumed by refrigeration units on a CO2 installation all appear in this kind of assessment.
If an environmental permit or a customer audit is behind your project, say so early: it affects pressure control, instrumentation and how the installation is expected to be monitored.
