EIGA Doc 127/23 addresses the other end of the size range from the user site documents: bulk liquid oxygen, nitrogen and argon storage on production sites. It was produced jointly through the International Harmonisation Council, so the same text is used by the regional gas associations worldwide.
Its core scope is the flat bottom tank connected to the production plant with an individual capacity greater than 125,000 litres. Appendices extend the guidance to large vacuum insulated tanks, manifolded tanks and cluster arrangements where the combined capacity passes the same threshold.
What the document covers
- Covers storage installations on production sites where the tank is flat bottom constructed, connected to the process plant, and above 125,000 litres individual capacity.
- Appendices address vacuum insulated tanks above 125,000 litres, manifolded tanks and cluster tanks by combined capacity.
- Provides guidance for people involved in design, installation and operation of these installations.
- Presents recommendations aimed at reducing the possibility of large releases of stored product.
- Published as an internationally harmonised document for worldwide use.
What it means for equipment
Most of our work sits below this threshold, in the vacuum insulated range. The document is still useful as the upper reference point, because it shows where the design philosophy changes: at production scale the dominant concern becomes containment of a large release rather than the day to day operation of a single vessel.
If a project involves clustering or manifolding several tanks, the combined capacity test in this document is the one that decides which regime applies.
