EIGA Doc 174/25 covers the installation and operation of food freezing and chilling equipment and its associated supply systems, used with refrigerated liquefied nitrogen and carbon dioxide. It is an internationally harmonised publication.
The emphasis is on the hazards created by the gas itself inside a working food plant: these gases displace oxygen, they collect in low lying and enclosed spaces, and the equipment that uses them sits in areas where people work.
What the document covers
- Covers installation and operation of food freezing and chilling equipment and the supply systems that feed it.
- Applies to refrigerated liquefied nitrogen and carbon dioxide.
- Topics include safety, design, handling, storage, use, ventilation, maintenance and monitoring of areas where these gases can accumulate.
- General guidance also applies to non-food cryogenic applications.
- Does not replace the risk assessment required from the operating company or employer.
- Does not address biological, chemical or physical food contamination, which belong to good manufacturing practice.
What it means for equipment
A freezing tunnel is the visible part of the installation, but the tank, the vaporiser and the transfer line feeding it are the part we supply. This document ties the two together: the storage and supply side has to be designed for the ventilation and monitoring regime of the room where the gas is consumed.
For a food project, say where the equipment will stand and how the space is ventilated. It affects the installation layout as much as the capacity does.
