EIGA Doc 66/22 is the European Industrial Gases Association code of practice for refrigerated liquid carbon dioxide stored at the premises of the user rather than at a production plant. It replaces the 2008 edition and was prepared by EIGA working group WG-6 on cryogenic vessels.
The document recognises two ways of holding refrigerated liquid CO2 on a user site: vacuum-insulated cryogenic vessels and pressure vessels with foam insulation and cladding. It then sets out the operating practice and the hazards that are specific to carbon dioxide rather than to cryogenic storage in general.
What the document covers
- Applies to outdoor refrigerated liquid CO2 vessels up to 40 bar design pressure and up to 125,000 litres water capacity.
- Larger installations can use the document as guidance, but local rules may require different safety distances.
- Covers equipment, site layout and design, commissioning, maintenance and repair, taking out of service, daily and periodic inspection, and personnel training.
- Does not cover tankers and containers used for bulk transport and delivery, which fall under TPED and ADR.
- Does not cover usage equipment downstream of the vessel or vaporiser, such as gas mixers.
- For general requirements on static vacuum-insulated vessels, it refers to EIGA Doc 224.
What it means for equipment
If you are specifying a CO2 installation, this document is where the insulation decision becomes concrete. Vacuum insulation and PIR / PUR foam insulation are both accepted, and the choice follows the duty, the site and the pressure control arrangement rather than a general preference.
The 40 bar and 125,000 litre boundaries are useful when you size a project: above them you are no longer inside the scope of a standard code of practice and the authority having jurisdiction becomes part of the design conversation.
